What is an MLIS Program?

Before exploring GRE MLIS programs that don’t require the GRE, it is important to know what an MLIS program is. The Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS), also referred to as the Master of Library and Information Studies or Science, is the master’s degree that is required for most professional librarian and archival positions in the United States. MLIS degrees tend to last between 2-4 years in total, but generally, programs need to be finished within 6 years before courses need to be retaken. The most common specializations in this field are:

An MLIS Program can be taken traditionally in person, online, or hybrid. An MLIS program can be completed in person, online, or in a hybrid format. What is the GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for most graduate school programs in the United States and Canada. The GRE is a test that tests a variety of academic skill sets of an individual that schools can use to gauge academic skills.  This test is similar to the SAT and ACT in that it surveys general areas of knowledge without a specific focus on specialized topics. The GRE typically has a fee to take the test, with most test fees averaging between $100 and $200 depending on the country and region, not including the cost of purchasing prep books and studying materials. The GRE is typically offered at specific sites and may require travel to testing sites. With the GRE being costly for most, the Educational Testing Service provides financial aid support for those who qualify. The GRE provides a standard metric by which institutions and graduate programs can compare applicants’ tests. Within the test, subjects are separated into three parts: Quantitative Reasoning (essentially math), Verbal Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Certain library science programs may only focus on select scores, rather than the overall score outcome. 

What Is an MLIS Program That Doesn’t Require the GRE?

An example of an MLIS program that does not require the GRE is the San Jose State University (SJSU) Master of Library and Information Science program. SJSU prepares graduate students for a wide range of careers as information professionals by letting them tailor their program to their own interests and career goals. The program is offered online, which includes courses, internships, academic advising, faculty office hours, guest speaker presentations, research assistant opportunities, and many other benefits for its graduate students. A GRE test, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, or a resume are all not required in applying for the Master in Library Science online program; therefore, this allows future students and prospective applicants to highlight academic achievements. The two most reliable indicators of whether a program requires the GRE are its academic field and its intended audience. So though SJSU does not require the GRE test scores, the MLIS program is aimed at curating a curriculum that aligns with the professions, which is shown in their offering of high-quality courses and a variety of career pathway guidance when enrolling in and completing your MLIS program with them.

What Are the Benefits of No-GRE MLIS Programs?

When an MLIS program states no GRE requirements, it means prospective students do not need to submit GRE scores as part of their application. The benefit of enrolling in a no-GRE MLIS program is that it does not disqualify applicants based on whether they can afford GRE prep and testing and the scoring of standardized tests. Removing the GRE may allow more underrepresented or low-income students to apply for graduate programs. As with most standardized testing, there is a higher risk of test results not accurately representing the applicant’s abilities, as opposed to transcripts, letters of recommendation, and even your statements.

Does the ALA Still Accredit MLIS Programs That Don’t Require the GRE?

Accredited library science degree programs are programs that have undergone extensive review and passed the American Library Association’s (ALA) requirements for accreditation. ALA continually updates and reviews library science programs to make sure that they are maintaining approved standards, processes, policies, and procedures that have been predetermined by the Council of the American Library Association. 

There are over 60 ALA-accredited programs in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, with numerous areas of concentration and career pathways within ALA-accredited programs. These programs include in-person, online, and hybrid formats. Having a program that has been approved by the American Library Association is important because most jobs in the library and information fields require a degree that has been approved by the ALA and may not recognize a degree that has not been approved. 

When an MLIS program does not require the GRE, the school and program can still be ALA accredited if the program passes the evaluation review. The quality of an MLS program doesn’t go down if applicants don’t have to take the GRE. As long as an MLIS program continuously keeps up with the standards, practices, and guidelines of the ALA, the program can continue conducting its program with or without a GRE requirement.

What Are Some MLIS Programs That Don’t Require the GRE? 

Listed are a few online MLIS programs that do not require the GRE, their application requirements, and a brief overview of their programs:

• The University of Alabama: Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS)

The University of Alabama is a public university, and the only ALA-accredited library science master’s in Alabama is offered at the state’s largest public university system. The MLIS program can be taken online or in a traditional format. No GRE is required for the program. The online tuition rate for the program is estimated at $15,120 (with 36 credit hours completed). To apply, applicants apply with a fee, a statement of purpose, transcripts (with a minimum 3.0 GPA), a resume, and three letters of recommendation.

The program also offers degrees for a Master of Fine Arts in Book Arts, as well as Graduate Certificates for Archival Studies, and School Library Media. The program’s curriculum includes classes like “Introduction to Administration and Management” and “Curating Digital Culture,” among others.

• The University of Arizona: M.A. in Library and Information Science (MLIS)

The University of Arizona is a public university that offers a fully ALA-accredited program degree in-person in Tucson or online, with no GRE required. The average tuition is $33,300 (with 37 credit units required). To apply, applicants will need to pay and submit an application, send transcripts with a minimum 3.0 GPA, a bachelor’s degree, a statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, and a resume.

The MLIS program offers degrees in Master of Arts in Library and Information Science, Master of Science in Information, and Ph.D. in Information. DU’s degree is offered online, in a traditional on-campus setting, and it is a private university. The University of Denver’s MLIS program requires no GRE. The total average tuition is estimated to cost $54,346 (requiring the completion of 58 credit hours). To apply, an applicant will need a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5, unofficial transcripts from a bachelor’s degree, and all postsecondary institutions you attended; if admitted, official transcripts will be required, pay the $65 application fee, submit two letters of recommendation, a current resume, a statement of professional goals, and a diversity statement. This program does not require a GRE test score.

• Drexel University: Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS)

Drexel University is a private university with an ALA-accredited MLIS program that is offered online. GRE is not required to apply. The tuition cost averages around $60,390 (with 45 credit hours). To apply, applicants will need a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0, submit an application, official transcripts, one letter of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and a resume.

The program is organized into four 10-week quarters per year (as opposed to the traditional two-semester system), which means you can take more courses in a shorter period of time. • The University of Iowa: Online MA in Library Information Science (MLIS)

The University of Iowa has the state’s only ALA-accredited graduate program in library science. The GRE is not required for the program. The tuition averages $4,036 in-state and $15,018 out-of-state (with 36 credit hours completed). To apply, applicants will have to pay and submit the $60 application, official transcripts, a statement of purpose, a resume, and three letters of recommendation.

The program is structured by building from a common curriculum into your chosen area of specialized concentration, or you can choose more well-rounded, general coursework. Specialty areas include academic librarianship, archives, and special collections, digital humanities, information processes, and medical librarianship. A Master of Arts in Book Studies and a JD/MA in Law Librarianship are two other degrees that can be earned. • University of Rhode Island: Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS)

The University of Rhode Island is a public university with a hybrid ALA-accredited library science program. The program does not require a GRE. The total estimated tuition for the university is $28,188 in-state; $54,432 out-of-state (requiring 36 credit hours of completion). To apply, applicants will need a bachelor’s degree, official transcripts, a paid and completed application resume, two letters of recommendation, and a 500-800 word statement of purpose.

The program is said to prepare students to become knowledgeable and ethically engaged library and information leaders and professionals. Degrees also offered are the MLIS/MA in History, MLIS/Master of Public Administration, and MLIS/MA in English. • Sam Houston State University: Online Master of Library Science (MLS)

Sam Houston State University is a public university with an ALA-accredited graduate program in library science. No GRE is required to apply. The tuition is an average of in-state tuition of $8,960 and out-of-state tuition of $18,752 (with 36 credit hours of completion). To apply, applicants need to pay and submit the $50 application, send an official transcript (with a minimum 3.0 GPA), send a writing sample, and interview for the program.

The program curriculum is taught to utilize the latest advances in technology and information literacy to prepare students to collaborate with teachers, manage multimedia collections, and maintain a successful library. • San Jose State University: Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) 

San Jose State University (SJSU) is a public university with an ALA-accredited MLIS online and in-person program.  SJSU does not require a GRE. The average total tuition for the degree is estimated to cost $22,575 (which is 43 total credits passed). To apply, an applicant will need a bachelor’s degree from any regionally accredited institution in any field with an overall GPA of at least 3.0, pay and complete the $70 application, and send official transcripts to admissions. The items not needed are GRE test scores, work experience, academic references, academic honors, and a statement of purpose paper. 

Other degree options are Teacher Librarian MLIS, Master of Archives and Records Administration, and Master of Science in Informatics. The curriculum follows the business and technology trends and the library trends in the field. • The University of Southern California (USC): Master of Management in Library and Information Science (MLIS)

USC is a private university with an online ALA-accredited Master of Management in Library and Information Science program. No GRE is required, and most students complete the path in about a year and a half. The average tuition cost is $79,800 (31 credit hours of completion). To apply, applicants need to pay and complete the online application, Have a bachelor’s degree, Official transcripts (with a GPA of 3.0 or above), a resume, two letters of reference, and a statement of purpose

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a public university with an in-person and online ALA-accredited Master of Arts in Library and Information Studies. • Florida State University: Master of Science in Information (MSI)

Florida State University has an online, ALA-accredited MLIS program. The GRE test scores have been waived automatically through the fall 2026 semester. The average tuition rate is $544.46-$579.32/per semester hour in-state depending on the county of residence and $1,175.66/per semester hour out-of-state (36 credit hours completed). To apply, applicants will need to pay and complete the graduate application, and submit a resume, Statement of Purpose, and transcripts.

The program also offers degrees for Ph.D. in Information and Specialist in Information. In addition, graduate certificates in health informatics, reference services, school librarian leadership, and information leadership and management are available. The program curriculum aims to provide graduate students with a solid foundation in general librarianship, such as information architecture and technology, information needs and services, and youth information needs and services, as well as an individualized program of study. • University of California at Los Angeles: Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS)

The University of California, Los Angeles, is a public university that offers an in-person ALA-accredited MLIS program. The GRE is optional, but applicants with a cumulative undergraduate GPA below 3.0 should submit GRE scores. The tuition rate is $16,847 in-state, and $31,949 out-of-state (with 72 credit hours). Standard Admissions Process for No GRE MLIS Programs

The standard admissions process for a no-GRE MLIS program would include the following:

• Bachelor’s Degree – for most MLIS programs, there is a requirement that applicants have at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. Depending on the MLIS program, some require a bachelor’s degree in a specific field, but most do not have that requirement. If you do not have a bachelor’s degree, it’s highly suggested that you see what educational requirements are necessary to apply for a program. It is also possible to contact the admission office of an MLIS program to discuss alternative options, such as accepting applicants with only an associate’s degree or relevant work experience.

• Application – for the majority of all MLIS programs, to be accepted into an MLS/MLIS program, you have to apply, along with paying the application fee, to their graduate school with your basic academic history and your intentions. These applications can vary in the information needed, including personal information (race, economic status, etc.), education history/additional degrees, and job history. 

• Transcripts/unofficial transcripts – MLIS programs are high-level academic programs, and with this status, schools ask for undergraduate or associate degree transcripts. Schools may ask for transcripts to be sent to a mailing address at the school’s admission offices, sent directly to the school’s application staff, or emailed to the school’s admissions email. It is important to acquire your official transcript from your previously-attended undergraduate or associate degree school. There is generally a fee, and it may be delivered sealed via mail or emailed to you. You will then send a copy of those transcripts to the MLIS admissions department as part of your application to the program.

• Personal Statement – it is common for a graduate admissions requirement to submit a personal statement. A personal statement is an opportunity for an applicant to give greater detail about their education and work experience. Applicants will be able to express why they’d like to be in the program and how it can be beneficial for themselves and the program. The personal statement section is the space for applicants to express how they may stand out amongst other applications and show what they plan on doing with their received degree.

• Letters of Recommendations/References – letters of recommendation are typically requested from administration to learn from those you have previous professional experience with; these recommendations would come from references who can make positive comments on your academic competence, analyze your ability to engage in graduate study, and your potential for future success in the library and information science field, or who can comment on your employment experience.
