The American Library Association (ALA) was founded on October 6, 1876, and is the oldest library association in the world. Today, it sets the national standard for librarianship and is respected and recognized globally. They also stay current in their policies and goals for librarianship to meet the needs of Americans in our current culture. In 2015, they adopted a new strategic plan and made necessary changes during each annual meeting. The last major change was to improve equality, diversity, and inclusion within library science.

The reason the ALA is important for those pursuing an education in library science is that it sets standards. If ALA accredits a master’s program, it meets the standard every library employer is looking for. Those wishing to become professional librarians should strongly consider an MLS or MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited school because it is the respected standard.

This article provides a summary and all the highlights of each ALA-accredited master’s program in the U.S. within each state.
