California State University Long Beach’s Teacher Librarian Services Credential is a wonderful alternative to a traditional library science education, particularly for those interested in becoming a teacher librarian at one of California’s many elementary, middle, or high schools. While not ALA-accredited, the credential is state-accredited, making it applicable to any in-state teacher librarian job that doesn’t require an MLIS.

The program is taught completely online, making it perfect for students in need of flexibility. Its curriculum is focused on leadership skills, as well as equitable, multicultural, and multilingual school library programming. In addition, the courses cover practical knowledge of library organization such as cataloging methods.
